Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has criticized California officials over the case of Harjinder Singh, an undocumented immigrant truck driver who was granted a state driver's license before allegedly causing a fatal crash. The incident, which occurred on August 16, 2025, resulted in the deaths of three people and has reignited debates over sanctuary-city policies and state-issued driver’s licenses for illegal aliens.Singh, a 28-year-old from India, entered the United States illegally in 2018 and was granted a commercial driver’s license in California despite his illegal status. He was arrested on three counts of vehicular homicide after allegedly making an unauthorized U-turn on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce, causing his trailer to jackknife and collide with a minivan, killing all three passengers.
Governor DeSantis has called the incident a tragic example of failed immigration policies and vowed to take action. He criticized California’s practice of issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, stating that it encourages illegal immigration and undermines public safety. DeSantis also called on Congress to act, suggesting that sanctuary cities should not receive federal funding.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that Singh crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in 2018 and later obtained a commercial driver’s license in California. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has also criticized California’s policies, stating that the three deaths could have been avoided if California had followed federal immigration laws.
This incident has intensified calls for stricter immigration enforcement. When tragic incidents like Singh’s make headlines, particularly when he shows no emotional reaction to the immediate deaths of three Americans, there is growing momentum for more stringent laws.
Florida, under Governor DeSantis, has become the first state to ban recognition of certain out-of-state licenses issued to undocumented immigrants. Wyoming and Tennessee have since followed with similar measures, and several more Republican-controlled legislatures are now considering doing the same.
