Federal Health Officials Report Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Major Egg Recall, Sickening Dozens Across Seven States
Federal health officials have reported a salmonella outbreak linked to a major egg recall, affecting dozens of individuals across seven states in the West and Midwest. The August Egg Company, based in Hilmar, California, voluntarily recalled approximately 1.7 million egg cartons due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall covers a variety of egg types, including organic and cage-free brown eggs, distributed between February and May.The affected states include Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming. The CDC has reported that at least 79 people have been sickened, with 21 requiring hospitalization. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps. Most people recover within a week, but the infection can be severe in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
The recalled eggs were sold under various brands, including Clover Organic, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics, Marketside, Raleys, Simple Truth, Sun Harvest, and Sunnyside. The eggs were distributed to numerous grocery stores, including Walmart, Safeway, and Raleys. Consumers are advised to discard any recalled eggs or return them to the store where they were purchased. Additionally, they should clean and disinfect any surfaces that came into contact with the eggs.
This recall underscores the importance of food safety and the need for stringent regulations to prevent such outbreaks. The impact on the egg industry and consumers is yet to be fully determined, but it highlights the potential risks associated with food production and distribution.
