Fed’s Collins: job market appears relatively stable || Fed’s Collins: outlook for inflation is uncertain with upside risks || Fed’s Collins: expects inflation to ease slowly to 2% target

Federal Reserve Bank of Boston President Susan Collins has indicated that the U.S. labor market exhibits signs of stability, with low unemployment and cautious hiring practices contributing to an “unusual kind of stability”. Recent data, including an unexpected decline in the unemployment rate in January 2026, reinforce this assessment, allowing policymakers to maintain current interest rates for now. However, Collins emphasized that while the labor market remains resilient, risks of further weakening persist, particularly if labor demand falls significantly short of supply.

Regarding inflation, Collins highlighted ongoing uncertainty, noting that price pressures remain above the Fed's 2% target despite a “slow, uneven decline” in recent months. She acknowledged upside risks to inflation, including potential lingering effects from elevated tariffs, which could push core PCE inflation above 3% by year-end. To justify further rate cuts, Collins stated, officials require “more confidence” that inflation will continue to moderate.

The Fed's current policy stance, described as “mildly restrictive”, reflects a deliberate approach to balancing inflation control with labor market support. Collins projected that inflation could ease gradually to the 2% target “in a reasonable amount of time,” though she cautioned that the process may take longer than previously anticipated. With policymakers prioritizing “active patience,” the focus remains on assessing incoming data to navigate a highly uncertain economic environment.
