Farmers in Virudhunagar district are opposing the Tamil Nadu Government's plan to acquire fertile land from the Regional Agricultural Research Centre in Kovilankulam for industrial development. The land is used for agricultural research and seed production, and farmers argue that the Government should strengthen support for farmers in rain-fed regions instead of weakening agricultural research. They claim that 30 lakh hectares of arid land are available in the State for industrial development.
