In the latest episode of Nikkei Asia News Roundup, Jada Nagumo and Brian Chapman discuss trending stories, including the transformation of Bengaluru and the decline of Japan's nomikai culture. The episode features news headlines, a notable story for deeper understanding, and highlights of the best stories.

Bengaluru, India—In a significant development for the healthcare sector, Sakra World Hospital has announced the appointment of Tandem Healthcare, a leading healthcare-focused EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) firm, to design and build its second state-of-the-art hospital—a 500-bed facility spanning 6.8 lakh square feet [1]. This new facility, set to be operational within 30 months, complements Sakra’s existing 350-bed tertiary care center in Marathahalli, aligning with the group’s goal to expand by over 1,000 beds in Bengaluru in the coming years.

The new hospital, located in North Bengaluru, is poised to be a one-of-a-kind green biophilic hospital, incorporating garden lounges, green balconies, planters, an arrival canopy, and serene lake views to create a healing environment inspired by nature [1]. This innovative design not only enhances the patient experience but also reflects Sakra’s commitment to sustainability and clinical excellence.

Sakra, competing with established healthcare providers such as Manipal and Fortis, is launching this ₹1,000 crore facility, backed by Secom Medical System and Toyota Tsusho. The G+9 tower will showcase Indo-Japanese architecture, blending tradition with innovation [1]. The hospital will deliver cutting-edge healthcare through advanced clinical programs, including a Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Programme with LINAC, MR-LINAC, Gamma Knife, Brachytherapy, and state-of-the-art nuclear medicine, alongside specialized Interventional Neuro & Rehab, Cardiology, and Mother & Child Programmes with a premium C-Suite [1].

This expansion is a strategic move for Sakra, aiming to strengthen its position in Bengaluru's healthcare market. The new facility is expected to cater to the growing demand for high-quality healthcare services in the city, contributing to the overall development of the healthcare infrastructure.
