Ethereum News Today: SharpLink’s ETH Staking Strategy Yields 97% Surge in Exposure Metric
SharpLink Gaming, Inc. (Nasdaq: SBET) has acquired an additional 39,008 Ether (ETH) over the past week, bringing its total ETH holdings to 837,230 as of August 31, 2025. The recent purchases, made at an average price of $4,531 per ETH, added $176 million to the company’s EthereumETH-- reserve, raising its total value to over $3.6 billion [1]. Joseph Chalom, co-CEO of SharpLinkSBET--, emphasized the company’s strategic focus on maximizing shareholder value through a disciplined approach to capital raising and ETH acquisitions, noting the importance of monitoring market conditions to execute purchases effectively [2].
The company’s capital raising efforts have been facilitated through its At-the-Market (ATM) facility, which generated $46.6 million in net proceeds during the week of August 25–29, 2025 [2]. Over the past three months, SharpLink has consistently utilized its ATM program to fund its Ethereum purchases, issuing a total of 2.4 million shares during the latest reporting period [1]. The company’s strategy has been to balance equity issuance with digital assetDAAQ-- acquisitions, adjusting its approach based on market demand and ETH price movements [2]. This method has allowed SharpLink to maintain a strong balance sheet, with approximately $71.6 million in cash and equivalents available for future operations and acquisitions [2].
SharpLink’s Ethereum strategy also includes participation in the staking ecosystem, which has provided additional returns for the company. As of August 31, the firm has earned 2,318 ETH in staking rewards since the launch of its treasury strategy on June 2, 2025 [1]. The company introduced a new metric known as “ETH Concentration” to provide greater transparency into its yield performance and balance sheet exposure. This metric is calculated by dividing the number of ETH held by 1,000 diluted shares outstanding and has increased to 3.94, representing a 97% rise since the program’s inception [1]. The ETH Concentration metric differentiates SharpLink from traditional corporate treasuries and offers investors a clearer picture of the firm’s exposure to Ethereum’s performance.
Despite its growing Ethereum reserves and staking returns, SharpLink’s co-CEO has issued a cautionary note about the risks associated with the crypto treasury model. Chalom emphasized that while high yields can be achieved through Ethereum, they come with significant risks, including credit risk, counterparty risk, smart contract risk, and duration risk [3]. He warned that companies seeking to maximize returns by taking on excessive risk could face serious consequences during a market downturn, potentially harming the broader industry [3]. Chalom’s comments highlight growing concerns among industry leaders about the sustainability of the crypto treasury model, particularly as firms compete to achieve the highest yields.
Industry observers have also raised questions about the long-term viability of Ethereum treasury companies. Josip Rupena, CEO of lending platform Milo, has compared the model to the risks that led to the 2008 financial crisis, citing parallels with collateralized debt obligations [3]. Others, however, argue that the strategy has successfully integrated Ethereum into traditional financial frameworks, attracting new capital and accelerating adoption [3]. As the sector continues to evolve, the balance between risk and reward will be crucial in determining the future success of companies like SharpLink in their pursuit of value creation through digital assets.
