U.S. envoy Tom Barrack: Syria is at a critical juncture, and peace and dialogue must prevail now.
Syria finds itself at a critical juncture as the ongoing conflict between Druze militias and Bedouin clans continues to escalate. U.S. envoy Tom Barrack has announced a ceasefire agreement between Syria and Israel, calling for peace and dialogue to prevail. This development comes amidst a worsening humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of people displaced and essential services disrupted. The ceasefire, supported by Turkey, Jordan, and other neighboring countries, follows several days of intense clashes and Israeli airstrikes targeting Damascus and Syrian military sites. The airstrikes were reportedly intended to safeguard the Druze minority, who form a substantial community in Israel and often serve in the Israeli military. The conflict has seen Druze militias and Bedouin clans engaging in tit-for-tat attacks and kidnappings, with the Syrian government intervening to support the Bedouins.
Barrack, in a statement posted on Platform X, urged all parties to lay down their arms and cooperate with other minorities to build a new, unified Syrian identity. He highlighted the need for peace and prosperity with neighboring countries. The ceasefire, however, has been met with skepticism, as renewed clashes have erupted between the Druze and Bedouin groups in parts of Sweida province.
The United Nations has been unable to bring in much-needed humanitarian and medical aid due to ongoing clashes. The World Health Organization was able to send trauma care supplies to Daraa province, but Sweida remains inaccessible. The volunteer group Syrian Civil Defense reported that the head of its center in Sweida city had been kidnapped by gunmen, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Syria's interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa has warned that the government will send troops back in to quell the fighting, while Druze leaders have called for unity and rejected Israeli intervention. The conflict has drawn in others, with Bedouin groups and supporters arriving from other areas of Syria to join the fight.
The ceasefire agreement, while a step towards peace, is yet to be officially confirmed by Syria or Israel. The future of Syria remains uncertain, with the need for sustained dialogue and cooperation to address the underlying issues between different communities.
