Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, recently took to the X platform to express his ambition for making life multiplanetary, highlighting the need for a dramatic advancement in rocket technology to reduce costs.

Musk responded to queries, suggesting that building a self-sustaining city on Mars might require at least 1 million tons of equipment. Current technology would demand an unfeasible 10 trillion dollars, but enhancing rocket technology by 1,000 times could reduce costs to around 1 trillion dollars. This vision aims to make multiplanetary existence affordable over a span of 40 years, averaging less than 25 billion dollars annually.

He emphasized that to achieve this, the cost per ton to Mars must be significantly lowered. Currently, US Mars missions cost approximately 1 billion dollars per ton, a figure rising rather than decreasing over time.

Developing a self-sustaining city on Mars, under present conditions, would cost more than US GDP, potentially reaching 10 trillion dollars. Musk's plan envisions a more feasible target if rocket technology can be improved as proposed.

Musk highlighted the design of Starship, aiming for over a 1,000-fold improvement on existing systems. Recent successes, including precise sea landings and booster recovery, have boosted his confidence in this endeavor.
