Elon Musk, at the helm of the newly established governmental efficiency department, issued a stern warning this week to federal employees: return to the office or face suspension. This announcement is the latest development following President Trump's directive that all federal workers return to their offices full-time.

Musk's statement on the X platform emphasized that employees disregarding the presidential order have received ample warning. “Those who continue to ignore the return-to-office mandate will face administrative leave starting this week,” Musk declared. This directive comes in response to Trump's executive order issued shortly after his inauguration, mandating a five-day onsite workweek for federal employees.

In response to resistance, the administration has offered a voluntary separation package for those unwilling to comply. Employees opting for this package are required to accept by February 6, 2025. Those who agree will continue to receive salaries and benefits and are exempt from onsite work requirements until September 30.

The Office of Personnel Management indicated that approximately 75,000 federal employees have accepted the voluntary separation deal. This initiative is part of a broader strategy led by Musk to scrutinize federal payrolls to achieve a potential trillion-dollar budget reduction.

Furthermore, Musk demanded that federal employees submit reports detailing their work over the past week, under the threat of job termination. This move has already resulted in contract terminations across various agencies, along with significant staff reductions.

Despite these sweeping changes, certain major governmental bodies, including the FBI, State Department, and the Pentagon, have advised their staff not to respond to Musk’s directives immediately, awaiting further instructions.
