EDF expects more strike action in France on Sept. 10
Paris, France - Electricité de France (EDF), the state-owned utility, is bracing for more strike action in France, following a series of labor disputes that have intensified the political crisis in the country. Workers at EDF plan to hold a three-day strike starting at 9 p.m. on September 1, 2025, according to a notice on the company's website. The strike is expected to demand higher wages and lower utility bills for consumers [2].This strike is part of a broader wave of labor actions in France. Unions are planning a general strike on September 10, aiming to paralyze the country in protest against government austerity measures and the cancellation of public holidays [1]. Sud-Rail, one of the top three rail unions, has called for a "massive strike" on September 10, which could lead to thousands of train cancellations on the SNCF network. Additionally, French air-traffic controllers belonging to the SNCTA union will walk out from the start of the morning shift on September 18 to the end of the night shift on September 19, potentially grounding thousands of flights across Europe [1].
The strikes come as Prime Minister François Bayrou faces a crucial vote of confidence in his government. The largest parties in parliament have announced that they will vote against the confidence vote, which is widely expected to lead to Bayrou's ouster. This would return President Emmanuel Macron to an impasse, as the country continues to struggle with one of Europe's largest debt burdens.
