DPIIT Extends Generative AI-Copyright Consultation Deadline to February 6

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has extended the public consultation period on its proposed policy framework for generative AI and copyright law by 30 days, until February 6, 2026. The framework proposes a royalty rate as a percentage of an AI company's global revenue, with the royalty obligation applying only upon commercialization of an AI model. AI companies would be able to use publicly available copyrighted content without seeking prior consent upon payment of the government-prescribed royalty.
