DOJ Sues Walgreens for Alleged Unlawful Prescription Practices

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc., alleging that the pharmacy giant engaged in unlawful prescription practices that contributed to the ongoing opioid crisis. The complaint, filed on January 17, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, accuses Walgreens of knowingly filling millions of prescriptions for controlled substances that lacked a legitimate medical purpose, were not valid, and/or were not issued in the usual course of professional practice.
