Comcast to cut positions in its division structure
Comcast, the telecommunications giant, has announced plans to streamline its operations by reducing the number of jobs in its biggest unit, which includes Xfinity internet, mobile, and pay television services. The move, set to commence in January, is part of the company's strategy to centralize operations and bolster its broadband business.According to a source familiar with the matter, Comcast will remove a layer between the corporate and regional offices, simplifying the management structure. The current three-tier management system, where regional teams report to division heads who link to corporate headquarters, will be replaced by a direct reporting line to a new executive overseeing operations nationwide .
The restructuring is expected to lead to job cuts, although the exact number of positions affected is yet to be determined. The memo sent to employees by Comcast clarifies that front-line teams supporting customers, such as those in customer service and retail, will remain unaffected. The company has been working on identifying which roles will be centralized to the corporate level.
This latest move comes as Comcast seeks to turn around its broadband business, which has experienced subscriber losses to wireless competitors such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. In April, the company introduced new pricing plans and five-year price locks for broadband customers to address churn in its Xfinity Internet service .
Comcast has a history of centralizing operations, including marketing, legal, and finance functions at the corporate level. The company also shifted from regional to national pricing, standardizing internet rates and offerings across the country.
"This change is not a reflection of anyone’s contributions — it is about simplifying how we work so we can compete more effectively," stated the memo to employees.
