The Indian coal ministry expects 147 commercial coal mines auctioned since 2020 to generate ₹47,500 crore in annual revenue and create 490,000 jobs across nine states. The ministry said the revenue-sharing design has nearly tripled states' coal revenue in a decade. The government enacted the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act 2026 to establish a uniform fiscal framework for the sector, preventing state governments from levying fresh taxes on mineral rights and lands.
