China's Wang Yi, Dong Jun to visit Vietnam March 15-17
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Finance Minister Dong Jun are set to visit Vietnam from March 15–17, 2026, to advance bilateral economic and diplomatic ties. The visit follows recent efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two nations, which have maintained a comprehensive strategic partnership since 2008. During the trip, officials will co-host the 15th session of the China-Vietnam Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation, focusing on trade, investment, and infrastructure projects.
Bilateral trade between China and Vietnam reached $175.6 billion in 2022, with Vietnam exporting $57.7 billion worth of goods, reflecting a strong commercial relationship. China has also become Vietnam's largest importer of agricultural and aquaculture products, while investments in digital economy and green growth sectors are expanding. However, challenges remain, including delays in Chinese-funded projects and unresolved issues in industrial cooperation. Officials aim to address these during the visit to accelerate progress.
Wang Yi emphasized China's commitment to prioritizing neighboring countries in its diplomatic agenda, highlighting shared interests in regional stability and economic integration. Discussions are expected to include measures to streamline border trade procedures, expand market access for Vietnamese agricultural products in China, and establish a Vietnam trade promotion office in Hainan Province to facilitate commerce.
The visit also aligns with broader regional goals, such as advancing the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea and fostering cooperation in science, technology, and environmental sectors. With both nations seeking to deepen mutual trust and address lingering disputes, the trip underscores the strategic importance of their economic and political partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.
