China Urges Immediate Ceasefire After US, Israel Strike Iran, Citing Economic and Strategic Concerns
China has called for an immediate cessation of military operations following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, emphasizing the need to avoid further escalation. The Foreign Ministry stated that Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity must be respected, aligning with broader calls for de-escalation from global institutions like the European Union and the Red Cross.
While China has deepened diplomatic and economic ties with Iran in recent years, its trade relationship remains imbalanced. China accounts for approximately one-third of Iran’s total trade but represents less than 1% of China’s global commerce. Beijing also imports roughly 90% of Iran’s oil exports, despite US sanctions, though analysts note that Iran is a “replaceable” energy partner for China given its diversified energy strategy.
The conflict has raised immediate concerns for China’s energy security. About one-third of China’s crude oil supply transits the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint near Iran. Following the strikes, some oil tankers avoided the strait, prompting cautious adjustments in shipping routes. This disruption underscores China’s vulnerability to regional instability, even as it has no formal military alliance with Iran.
Strategically, China has supported Iran’s integration into multilateral forums like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS, aiming to counter US influence. However, implementation of a 2021 $400 billion strategic cooperation agreement with Iran has been limited, reflecting Beijing’s measured approach to Middle East engagements. Additionally, China has avoided supplying weapons to Iran due to sanctions risks, opting instead for diplomatic advocacy.
The crisis has also prompted practical measures, such as China’s evacuation advisory for citizens in Israel and rerouted flights by Cathay Group to avoid conflict zones. As global markets monitor the situation, China’s stance highlights its balancing act between advocating for stability and safeguarding its economic interests in a volatile region.
