China Launches First Medical Data Space in Greater Bay Area, Fostering Collaboration and Research in $2 Trillion Economic Region

The Chinese University of Hong Kong and its partners have launched the first medical data space in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, aiming to promote medical collaboration and scientific research. The data space will ensure data security across the flow process and contribute to the development of global health technology. Founding members include Zhongda Hospital, Shenzhen Qianhai Shekou Free Trade Zone Hospital, and Guangzhou Nansha District Health and Health Bureau. The launch aligns with China's four-year Trusted Data Space Development Action Plan.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), CUHK-Shenzhen, and Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology (GDSTC) have recently joined forces to establish the first medical data space in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area [1]. The "1+1+1" joint funding program will see the three parties invest nearly HK$90 million over a three-year period from 2024 to 2026. This marks the first time Guangdong Province and universities with campuses in both Guangdong and Hong Kong have jointly invested in research collaboration [1].

The GDSTC has collaborated with CUHK and CUHK-Shenzhen to support deepened technological cooperation between teams from the two places. The scope of cooperation includes establishing innovation platforms, exploring the construction of joint laboratories, and participating in science forums in the Greater Bay Area [1].
