AI Chip Design Milestone
Baidu's semiconductor design subsidiary, Kunlunxin, has secured over 1 billion yuan in orders from China Mobile [1]. This significant milestone marks Kunlunxin's progress in developing advanced AI chip designs for the Chinese market. The partnership with China Mobile is expected to drive growth for Kunlunxin and further solidify Baidu's position in the Chinese tech industry. Kunlunxin, backed by Baidu, which owns 59% of the company, will supply AI chips compatible with Nvidia's CUDA platform to first-tier suppliers of China Mobile, including H3C Technologies and ZTE. This strategic partnership is notable for its potential to ease the transition for developers from Nvidia's products, given the high compatibility of Kunlunxin's chips with the CUDA ecosystem.
The contract win is part of China's broader strategy to reduce dependence on foreign technology, especially in critical sectors like artificial intelligence. This initiative is evident in the success of domestic chip designers like Kunlunxin, which has shown significant progress in the development of AI chips [1]. Baidu has been making substantial strides in AI chip development. In April, the company successfully deployed a cluster of 30,000 self-developed, third-generation P800 Kunlun chips, capable of supporting the training of AI models comparable to those developed by Chinese AI startup DeepSeek [1]. This technological advancement highlights the potential of domestic chip designs and positions Baidu and Kunlunxin as key players in the AI chip market.
New Energy Breakthroughs
In parallel, China is making significant strides in new energy technologies. Chinese scientists expect to soon make a breakthrough in airborne wind turbine technology, with the world’s first megawatt-level system set to take flight [2]. The floating wind power generation system resembles an airship and is being held up as a possible power solution for remote locations and disaster zones where conventional power supplies cannot be used or are inadequate. The researchers said their system’s output – more than 30 times more powerful than the best in other countries – could turn a scientific vision first proposed in 1957 by renowned scientist Qian Xuesen into a tangible reality.
The system was developed by SAWES in collaboration with Tsinghua University and the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In a lecture hosted by Beijing Radio and Television Station on August 17, Weng Hanke, chief technology officer of Beijing SAWES Energy Technology Company, announced that the firm’s latest power generation unit, with a capacity of 1MW, was preparing for a test flight. This breakthrough comes amidst China's efforts to lead in new energy technologies, as evidenced by its dominance in new energy patents, photovoltaic conversion efficiency, offshore wind turbine capacity, and energy storage.
