China says it is assessing the US probe

The U.S. has initiated new trade investigations into multiple partners, including China, the European Union, and others, following the Supreme Court’s invalidation of President Donald Trump’s previous tariff policies. The probe, announced by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, aims to justify potential new tariffs on goods from countries alleged to engage in unfair trade practices, such as dumping or overcapacity exports. This move seeks to rebuild Trump's tariff pressure amid ongoing tensions.

China’s Ministry of Commerce has stated it is conducting a “full assessment” of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent tariff ruling and has criticized Washington’s unilateral trade measures as violations of international and domestic laws. The ministry also highlighted concerns over U.S. policies targeting Chinese technology firms, including restrictions on chip exports, and warned it would “firmly safeguard its interests” through reciprocal actions.

In response to U.S. trade probes, China has launched its own anti-dumping and anti-discrimination investigations into U.S. chip-related policies, alleging protectionist motives aimed at suppressing China’s high-tech industries. The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) has also been tasked with evaluating the economic impact of revoking China’s permanent normal trade relations status over six years.

Bilateral trade discussions between Chinese and U.S. officials are scheduled to continue, with topics including tariffs, export controls, and the future of tech-sector cooperation. Both sides have emphasized the need for resolution, though mutual accusations of unfair practices underscore the complexity of ongoing negotiations.
