The Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia purchased HMCS Chaudière, a retired Canadian destroyer escort, for $1 plus 7 cents GST from the Canadian Department of National Defence. The ship was converted into an artificial reef and sunk to the ocean floor to serve as an ecological machine, supporting aquatic life from microorganisms to megafauna. With an estimated three million shipwrecks worldwide, researchers are finding surprising benefits from these underwater ecosystems.
