Business leaders are grappling with a new challenge in the wake of the Trump administration’s intensified immigration enforcement: addressing employee fears and anxieties about potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

ICE agents have been increasingly present in workplaces, schools, restaurants, and other community gathering spots, particularly in areas with predominantly Latino populations. For many businesses, the first step is to develop a plan in case of such raids.

“If you are potentially subject to raids, and are not communicating something out to your employees about this, to me, that’s negligence,” said Kevin Martin, chief research officer and CHRO advisor for a research firm.

Many employees may not be directly concerned about their own arrest but could be affected through friends, family members, or a general sense of fear within their community.

Effective internal communication is crucial. Even if public statements are not desired, addressing the current situation in the U.S. is essential. Offering flexible work arrangements can help alleviate some of the stress. While employersEIG-- should not provide legal advice, they can refer employees to external resources such as local immigration attorneys, support groups, or emergency hotlines.

“I think we have to look at all of the tools in our toolkit as employers, that allows people to be successful,” said an employment lawyer.

Business leaders are advised to be proactive in addressing these concerns to maintain a supportive and productive work environment.
