Building a Custom Joule Agent with MCP on SAP BTP: A Reference Architecture for Enterprise AI Initiatives

A custom Joule agent was created using Joule Studio to integrate curated HR data stored in HANA Cloud, talent management data stored in an external system, a governed Model Context Protocol (MCP) server layer, a custom query service, and a SAP BTP environment (Cloud Foundry). The agent was designed to enable the VP of Engineering to ask complex questions such as "Which engineers in the Product Development team have Kubernetes experience backed by internal project evidence?" and "Recommend 5 engineers suitable for leading the cloud migration project." The custom agent integrates with multiple data sources and provides governed access to AI systems for reasoning across multiple systems safely, explainably, and in a controlled manner.
