A new wildfire is rapidly spreading near Moncton, spanning 30 hectares and listed as out of control. Firefighters from Moncton, Dieppe, and Riverview are actively battling the blaze. Additionally, the provincial fire data dashboard lists the Oldfield Road fire in Miramichi as spanning 340 hectares, with three homes and a cottage under evacuation order and 15 homes under alert [2].
The government has banned access to all Crown land, restricting activities such as fishing, camping, hiking, driving into the woods, and using trail systems. Camping is only allowed in designated campgrounds, and private landowners are strongly encouraged to follow the same precautions [1].
The province's wildfire science officer, Danny Goddard, has warned of a long-term drying trend, with lower humidity and high temperatures expected to continue into the end of the week. Natural Resources Minister John Herron described the situation as extremely volatile and emphasized the need for New Brunswickers to stay out of the woods for their own safety and the safety of their neighbors, communities, wildlife habitats, and forests [1].
Premier Susan Holt also urged New Brunswickers to look after one another and keep safety top of mind during this period of prolonged wildfire risk. The government has banned all burning in the province, including in provincial parks, and up-to-date information on wildfire risks and burn bans is available on the Fire Watch website [1].
The Oldfield Road fire is one of 12 active fires burning in the province, with nine currently being patrolled. The fire near Canterbury in Carleton County was brought under control on Sunday afternoon [2].
