Tampa Bay Rays' All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe has been placed on the 10-day IL due to left oblique tightness. Lowe was enjoying a solid first half of the season, hitting 272/.324/.487 with 19 home runs and 50 RBI. He will not compete in the mid-summer classic. Curtis Mead has been recalled from Triple-A Durham to replace Lowe.
Tampa Bay Rays' All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe has been placed on the 10-day injured list (IL) due to left oblique tightness. This injury occurred during the Rays' 7-5, 10-inning win over the Twins at Target Field last Sunday. Lowe's absence is a significant blow to the Rays, who have been struggling with a losing streak of nine games out of their past 13.Lowe, who had been hoping to participate in the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, has been replaced on the American League roster by Royals infielder Maikel Garcia. However, Lowe plans to attend the All-Star festivities in Atlanta with his family. He was quoted as saying, "As much as you want to play in the All-Star Game, that's one game versus what we can achieve at the end of the year" [1].
Lowe's injury is the second time in his career that he has been named an All-Star but unable to participate in the Midsummer Classic. In 2019, he was sidelined by a right shin bruise when he made the AL squad as a rookie. This season, Lowe has been a key contributor to the Rays' success, hitting .272/.324/.487 with 19 home runs and 50 RBIs in 84 games. His absence will be felt, as he has been a significant part of the team's offensive output.
The Rays have recalled infielder Curtis Mead from Triple-A Durham to replace Lowe. Mead will be an option around the infield if needed, as he has been back in the big leagues eight days after being optioned to Triple-A to make room for shortstop Ha-Seong Kim.
Lowe's IL stint is backdated to Tuesday, and he plans to return when eligible on July 18, when the Rays open their second-half schedule at George M. Steinbrenner Field against the Orioles. The Rays' manager, Kevin Cash, hopes for a short IL stint for Lowe, but they will have to wait and see how he feels after the All-Star break.
