Bitwise's Tokenized Solana ETF: A Bet on the Rails, Not a Bull Case for SOL

BSOL--
SOL--

Bitwise's strategic move in the Solana market turned out not to be a bigger fund, a lower fee, or a new token. In mid-August, the asset manager that built the largest Solana exchange-traded fund said it would work with a fintech firm called Superstate to let shares of that fund be held in tokenized, onchain form. The announcement was brief and hedged, but it signals where the next fight over Solana will be won: not on the blockchain the ETF tracks, but on the rails of the ETF itself.

To see why that matters, it helps to know what Bitwise has already built. Its Solana Staking ETF, ticker BSOLBSOL--, was the first U.S. spot Solana product when it launched in late October 2025, and it has since become the category's clear leader. Roughly ten months in, it became the first Solana ETF to top $1 billion in assets while holding more than half of all money across every Solana ETF and capturing roughly 79% of the net flows into the category since launch.

That dominance is a distribution story, not a valuation story. Solana has been a difficult asset to hold over the past year: the coin sits near $100, and BSOL is down about 41% over twelve months, with cumulative inflows reaching roughly $1 billion even though most of those buyers bought into a falling price. So when a rival enters — Morgan Stanley entered the Solana staked-ETF space in July 2025, and Grayscale and Fidelity products trail far behind — Bitwise cannot compete on performance. It competes on format instead.

That is what the Superstate partnership is. Bitwise wants to become the first fund anywhere to offer tokenized U.S. fund shares, with BSOL as the first candidate, and it will let shareholders choose to hold their shares either in the traditional book-entry form via the Depository Trust Company or as tokens recorded on a blockchain through Superstate's transfer agent. The shares themselves are unchanged: same rights, same price, same purchase channels.

Here is the part worth reading twice. Today, tokenization changes almost nothing about how the shares behave. Tokenized BSOL shares are not freely transferable outside Superstate's recordkeeping system — they cannot be moved to a crypto wallet or traded on a decentralized exchange like an ordinary token. An ETF share with a token wrapper is still, for now, an ETF share. The genuinely new capability this move points toward — shares that trade 24/7 and can be pledged as collateral in DeFi — is locked behind a U.S. trading rule.

The rule is the SEC's trade-through rule, part of Regulation NMS, which prevents a venue from executing an order at a price worse than the best quote on another exchange. Superstate has already built the trading rails — connecting tokenized securities to automated market makers and DeFi lending protocols — but active trading is suspended until the rule changes. The SEC proposed scrapping the trade-through rule in June 2026, and Superstate's CEO has called such a change a "huge unlock" for tokenized securities. Bitwise is placing a bet that the unlock happens and that being first matters.

For an investor, the useful result is a clean boundary. This move is a statement about Bitwise's strategic optionality and about where the plumbing of fund ownership is heading — not a changed case for owning Solana. BSOL still tracks a single volatile asset, and a staking yield in the mid-single digits cannot absorb a 40% drawdown. Whether the tokenization bet pays off turns on a regulatory decision Bitwise does not control. If the rails open, Bitwise has positioned itself as the asset manager already standing on them. Until then, it is an option on a frontier — real, cheap for Bitwise to buy, and unrelated to what Solana's price does next.
