In 2011, an individual known as Plato embarked on a pioneering journey across North America, aiming to prove that Bitcoin could function as a viable form of currency in everyday life. Plato, an early adopter of Bitcoin, had discovered the cryptocurrency in 2010 and had even mined coins when their value was less than $1. Inspired by Bitcoin's potential to revolutionize the world, Plato set out on a 3,000-mile road trip from the East Coast to the West Coast, using only Bitcoin to pay for his expenses, including food, gas, and lodging.

Plato's goal was to demonstrate that Bitcoin could be used in practical, everyday scenarios, even though it was largely unknown to the general public at the time. He was the first person to attempt such a journey, relying solely on Bitcoin for all his needs. Plato was prepared to educate people about Bitcoin as he traveled, hoping to accelerate its adoption and help it reach a critical mass.

During his trip, Plato used an interactive map to connect with friendly strangers across the US who were willing to barter Bitcoin for supplies or shelter. He often had to convince others to purchase items for him using their own dollars, which he would then repay in Bitcoin. A video from the trip shows Plato trading Bitcoin for gasoline outside a 7/11 in Salt Lake City, using an early hosted-wallet service called MyBitcoin.

As Plato journeyed through the United States, Bitcoin experienced one of its first significant price rallies, increasing from $1 in March to $2 by the time he reached Alabama. He continued his journey, giving one of the first college lectures on Bitcoin in Alabama and arriving in Denver in late May, where Bitcoin had climbed to $8. In Denver, Plato enjoyed various activities, including skydiving and attending concerts. He also stayed with a friend whose kitchen had been converted into a home mining setup, which successfully found a blockXYZ-- and netted a 50 BTC reward, donated to fund Plato's trip.

By the time Plato reached Las Vegas, Bitcoin had broken past $14 and quickly doubled to $30 for the first time ever in June. He made it to the West Coast shortly after and settled in Portland. On July 1, three months after starting his journey, Plato shared an update on Tumblr, stating that he had successfully made it from the East Coast to the West Coast without spending a single dollar, relying entirely on Bitcoin. He continued to use Bitcoin wherever he could and introduced hundreds of people to the cryptocurrency during his journey.

Plato's road trip was a groundbreaking event that proved Bitcoin could reimagine money by going all-in himself, at a time when Bitcoin was, at best, an esoteric quirk to most people. His journey not only demonstrated the practical use of Bitcoin but also helped to spread awareness and understanding of the cryptocurrency, making him a Bitcoin legend.
