Bitcoin Surges 20% to $87,000 as Metaplanet and Strategy Buy $600 Million
Bitcoin's price surged past $87,000, driven by significant purchases from institutional investors Metaplanet and Strategy. On April 21, these two firms collectively acquired nearly 7,000 BTC, valued at approximately $600 million, underscoring their confidence in Bitcoin as a safeguard against inflation and economic uncertainty.
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-based investment firm, added 330 BTC to its holdings, bringing its total to 4,855 BTC. This acquisition, worth around $28.2 million, is Metaplanet's third Bitcoin purchase this month. The firm's average cost per coin is about $85,386, with a total holding value of roughly $414 million. Metaplanet's CEO, Simon Gerovich, highlighted the firm's strong performance, reporting a Q2 BTC yield of 12.1% and a year-to-date yield of 119.3%. Gerovich emphasized the importance of Bitcoin per share (BPS) as a key metric for treasury-focused crypto companies and noted that Bitcoin offers protection against fiat currency dilution amid the expansion of the global money supply.
Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategyMSTR--, purchased approximately 6,556 BTC for $555.8 million. This acquisition brings Strategy's total holdings to 538,200 BTC, with an average cost per coin of $67,766. The company's year-to-date BTC yield for 2025 stands at 12.1%. According to an April 21 filing, the latest purchase was funded through the sale of 1.76 million shares of its Class A common stock and over 91,000 shares from a preferred stock series. These sales generated $547.7 million and $7.8 million, respectively. Chairman Michael Saylor noted that more than 13,000 institutions and over 800,000 retail investors hold shares of Strategy, with roughly 55 million people indirectly exposed to the company’s Bitcoin position through various financial products.
The aggressive buying by these institutional players signals a renewed confidence in Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and monetary instability. Both Metaplanet and Strategy have demonstrated a strong commitment to Bitcoin, viewing it as a crucial asset in their investment strategies. This trend of institutional adoption is likely to continue, further bolstering Bitcoin's position in the global financial landscape.
