Axelera, a competitor to Nvidia and AMD in the AI accelerator market, has unveiled its second inference processor, Europa. The Netherlands-based company describes Europa as an AI processor that provides high-performance inference capabilities. Axelera's new chip is designed to accelerate AI workloads, such as image recognition and natural language processing, in a cost-effective and power-efficient manner.

Axelera, a Netherlands-based startup, has announced its second-generation AI inference processor, Europa, aiming to compete with industry giants Nvidia and AMD. Europa is designed to accelerate AI workloads, including image recognition and natural language processing, in a cost-effective and power-efficient manner.

In an interview with CRN, Alexis Crowell, Axelera AI’s CMO and general manager of Americas, revealed that Europa is built on last-generation PCIe Gen 4 connectivity to ensure compatibility with a wide range of systems. This strategic decision allows Europa to be plugged into existing infrastructure, making it easier for integrators to adopt the chip Axelera AI Challenges Nvidia With Europa Chip For High-Performance Edge Computing[1].

Europa offers significant performance improvements over its predecessor, the Metis lineup. The new chip provides 629 trillion operations per second (TOPS) within a 45-watt power envelope, compared to Metis's maximum of 214 TOPS using four to eight watts. This performance boost is particularly notable in high-performance edge computing use cases, such as large language models and computer vision applications Axelera AI Challenges Nvidia With Europa Chip For High-Performance Edge Computing[1].

The Europa chip is targeted at various high-performance edge computing scenarios, including robotics, surveillance, and AI factories. It is positioned to compete with Nvidia’s edge computing products, such as the L40 GPU, and offers higher performance per dollar and per watt for specific AI models Axelera AI Challenges Nvidia With Europa Chip For High-Performance Edge Computing[1].

Europa is set for release in the first quarter of 2026, and it will be supported by Axelera's Voyager software development kit, ensuring compatibility with Metis products. This unified software ecosystem allows customers to deploy both Metis and Europa chips seamlessly, catering to mixed use cases and solutions Axelera AI Challenges Nvidia With Europa Chip For High-Performance Edge Computing[1].

The new chip features eight AI processing units and quadrupled maximum memory capacity to 64 GB per chip, along with an on-board video decoder to optimize computer vision models. This integration of pre- and post-processing capabilities directly on the chip enhances overall performance and reduces the total cost of ownership for customers Axelera AI Challenges Nvidia With Europa Chip For High-Performance Edge Computing[1].

Axelera’s focus on compatibility and performance efficiency positions Europa as a strong contender in the AI accelerator market. As the company continues to expand its global partner program and grow its business in North America and South America, Europa is poised to challenge established players and capture a significant share of the high-performance edge computing market.
