AI is becoming increasingly important to comply with legal, ethical, and social norms. Researchers at TU Wien have developed a new approach combining machine learning and logic to train autonomous agents to follow predefined norms. The AI can be given a hierarchy of norms, with some being more important than others. This work was recognized with the Distinguished Paper Award at IJCAI 2025. The TU Wien team represents norms as logical formulas and punishes the AI for non-compliance. This allows for the computation of relative weights for different objectives and the encoding of complex norms.
