"Argentine Lawyers Demand U.S. Probe into LIBRA Token Collapse"
Argentine lawyers have filed a criminal complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding the LIBRA token's downfall, according to local reports. The complaint seeks an investigation into the key figures behind the project's collapse and the role of Argentine President Javier Milei.
Separately, the Civic Coalition ARI has filed a criminal complaint with the Ministry of Justice, alleging bribery and fraud connected to the LIBRA token. The coalition argues that the government cannot act as both judge and jury in the matter.
The LIBRA token experienced a significant price surge on Feb. 14, following a post by President Milei on X, which promoted the project as a means to fund small Argentine businesses and start-ups. The post, which has since been deleted, included the token's contract address. The token's market cap briefly reached $4.56 billion before plummeting to $257 million hours later.
These legal challenges build on earlier criminal charges filed in Argentina, accusing Milei of participating in fraud by endorsing the LIBRA token. The government has attempted to distance the president from the scandal, claiming that Milei was deceived by the traders who launched the project and was unaware of its funding mechanism.
Opposition lawmaker Leandro Santoro has called for President Milei's impeachment, stating that the LIBRA scandal has embarrassed Argentina on an international scale. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump shared a picture of Milei on Truth Social, accompanied by a quote that suggests printing money would not end poverty.
In an interview with Coffeezilla, LIBRA founder Hayden Davis commented on the criticism surrounding the project, saying, "All the bitching on socials is all the people that don’t get into the deals. You’ll never hear them bitch if they’re in the deal."
