Argentina LNG project signs 8-year gas sales deal with Germany

Argentina LNG Project Secures 8-Year Gas Sales Agreement with Germany

Argentina’s Southern Energy, a joint venture comprising Pan American Energy (PAE), YPF, Pampa Energía, Harbour Energy, and Golar LNG, has signed an 8-year agreement with Germany's state-owned Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) to supply 2 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually starting in late 2027. The deal, formalized as a nonbinding heads of agreement, marks Argentina's largest LNG export contract by volume and duration, positioning the country to expand its role in the global energy market.

The agreement ties to the Hilli Episeyo, a floating liquefaction vessel set to operate in Argentina's San Matías Gulf. The vessel, with a capacity of 2.45 million tonnes per year, will dedicate over 80% of its output to SEFE under the deal. Combined with a second planned vessel, the committed volume represents over 30% of Southern Energy's projected 6 million-ton annual capacity. While final contract terms remain pending, projected exports could exceed $7 billion over the 8-year period, depending on global LNG price trends.

For Argentina, the deal aligns with efforts to leverage Vaca Muerta, the country's vast shale gas reserve, as a long-term export resource. Southern Energy has secured over $15 billion in investments for the project, with expected exports between 2027 and 2035 projected to generate more than $20 billion in revenue. The project will also create 1,900 direct and indirect jobs, primarily in Río Negro province, and boost domestic supplier participation.

SEFE emphasized the agreement's role in diversifying Europe's energy supply and enhancing security, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties. The company, which operates across the energy value chain and serves 50,000 clients globally, will leverage its experience with the Hilli Episeyo, previously deployed in Cameroon.

Logistical progress includes the arrival of the MV Billion Star at San Antonio Este port, delivering 10,000 tonnes of steel pipes for pipeline construction. This underscores Argentina's advancing infrastructure to support LNG exports from Vaca Muerta.

The agreement reflects growing international confidence in Argentina's energy potential but also highlights challenges, including macroeconomic stability and infrastructure development, which will shape the project's long-term success.
