Apple Inc: Mac mini will be made at a new facility in Houston

Apple Inc. Announces U.S. Mac Mini Production Expansion in Houston
Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) has announced plans to manufacture its Mac mini desktop computer at a new facility in Houston, Texas, marking the first time the product will be produced in the United States. The move is part of the company's broader strategy to expand domestic manufacturing and aligns with its $600 billion commitment to U.S. investments over four years, announced in 2025. The Houston facility will also expand production of advanced AI servers and include a 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center to train workers in cutting-edge techniques.

The decision to shift some Mac mini production to the U.S. follows earlier efforts to diversify Apple's supply chain, including increased chip manufacturing partnerships with TSMC, Broadcom, and Texas Instruments. For instance, GlobalWafers' $4 billion silicon wafer plant in Sherman, Texas, and Amkor's $7 billion Arizona semiconductor facility—both supported by Apple—will supply critical components for the company's products. Additionally, Corning's Kentucky facility now produces 100% of the cover glass for iPhones and Apple Watches, further emphasizing Apple's domestic supply chain integration.

While the Houston facility will meet local demand initially, Apple's chief operating officer, Sabih Khan, noted that Mac mini production will continue in Asia, with the U.S. operation scaling incrementally. This approach reflects Apple's cautious strategy to balance domestic manufacturing goals with global supply chain efficiency. The company has faced scrutiny over past commitments, such as a Texas factory promoted under former President Trump, which later shifted production to Thailand.

Apple's Houston expansion is expected to create thousands of jobs and bolster U.S. manufacturing capabilities. The Advanced Manufacturing Center will provide hands-on training to students, suppliers, and small businesses, leveraging Apple's proprietary processes to enhance industry-wide standards. Meanwhile, the Detroit-based Apple Manufacturing Academy has already trained over 130 U.S. manufacturers in AI and automation.

For investors, the move underscores Apple's long-term focus on supply chain resilience and domestic economic partnerships. However, the company's reliance on Asian production for most products—including iPhones and iPads— suggests a gradual, rather than immediate, shift toward U.S.-centric manufacturing.
