Apple (AAPL.US) is expanding its streaming video service Apple TV+ to Android devices for the first time, in a move aimed at growing its streaming user base and boosting the competitiveness of its streaming service. Apple TV+ has been limited to Apple's own operating system and third-party TV platforms such as Roku since its launch in 2019. Android is Apple's biggest competitor in the smartphone space, and while Apple also offers a music service app for Android, the company typically tries to keep users within its own product ecosystem. Apple's rare move to offer its service on Android devices indicates the company is trying to make Apple TV+ more appealing and challenge streaming platforms such as Netflix (NFLX.US) and Disney+. Despite some popular shows, Apple is estimated to have a far smaller user base than some of the larger platforms, and Apple has never disclosed user or revenue data for Apple TV+. Apple TV+ originally launched at $4.99 a month, and now costs $9.99. In addition to launching Apple TV+ on Android, Apple is also opening up MLS season tickets to Android users of Apple TV+. The service, which launched in February 2023, allows fans to watch MLS matches.
