The discovery was made in collaboration with Equinor, Sonangol E&P, and Acrep, with Azule Energy holding a 35% interest in the block. The well encountered gas- and condensate-bearing sandstones, indicating the presence of a working hydrocarbon system in the Lower Congo Basin. This find opens up new exploration opportunities in the region.
Azule Energy's CEO, Adriano Mongini, stated, "This is a landmark moment for gas exploration in Angola. The Gajajeira-01 well is the country’s first dedicated gas exploration well, and its success reinforces our confidence in the potential of the Lower Congo Basin. We are proud to contribute to Angola’s long-term energy development with a focus on sustainability and energy security."
The company plans to continue evaluating the full potential of the Gajajeira-01 discovery and determine the best path forward for potential development. The ongoing drilling campaign will now target the Lower Oligocene interval LO300.
This announcement follows the recent extension of the production sharing contract (PSC) for Block 15 until 2037, highlighting Azule Energy's commitment to long-term energy development in Angola.

Azule Energy, a joint venture between BP and Eni, has announced a gas discovery in Angola's Block 1/14. The Gajajeira-01 well, drilled in a water depth of 95m and 60km off the coast, encountered promising hydrocarbon-bearing formations in the Lower Oligocene target, LO100. Preliminary results suggest good reservoir mobility and significant gas volumes in place, potentially exceeding one trillion cubic feet. The company plans to further evaluate the discovery's full potential and devise an optimal development strategy.
