Anglo American Nears Teck Resources Acquisition, Creating Mining Giant
Anglo American, a leading global mining company, is reportedly close to finalizing a deal to acquire Teck ResourcesTECK--, a prominent Canadian mining firm. Insiders have revealed that Anglo American is in advanced discussions for the potential acquisition, with an announcement potentially coming as early as this week. The deal, if completed, would be one of the largest in the mining industry's history. The acquisition is anticipated to be primarily funded through stock, although the final structure and timing of the deal remain subject to change, and negotiations could still fall through.
The merger of these two companies would create a mining powerhouse with extensive global operations. TeckTECK-- Resources, which has seen its stock price decline by approximately 20% over the past 12 months, currently holds a market capitalization of around 237 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 171 billion U.S. dollars). In contrast, Anglo American's stock price has risen by 15% over the same period, giving it a market capitalization of about 269 billion British pounds (approximately 364 billion U.S. dollars).
Both companies have been the targets of larger mining conglomerates in recent years. Last year, Anglo American successfully fended off a 490 billion U.S. dollar takeover bid from BHPBHP--, while Glencore's attempt to acquire Teck in 2023 was unsuccessful. This latest move by Anglo American to acquire Teck Resources could help the company expand its scale, thereby reducing the risk of becoming a takeover target itself.
In recent times, both companies have been streamlining their business structures. Teck Resources has sold a significant portion of its coal business to Glencore, while Anglo American has exited platinum mining and is attempting to sell its coal mining operations and divest its De Beers diamond division. The potential merger could yield significant synergies. Teck Resources' flagship mine is the Quebrada Blanca 2 copper project in Chile, while Anglo American holds a stake in the adjacent Collahuasi copper mine. The combination of these two operations could enhance production and profitability through joint management and operational efficiencies.
