Anand: Canada stands with Iranian people

Canada Affirms Support for Iranian People Amid Regional Tensions
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated Canada’s solidarity with the Iranian people amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East. The government has condemned Iran’s destabilizing actions, including its nuclear program and support for regional proxy groups, while emphasizing diplomatic and economic measures to counter the regime’s influence according to the government statement.

Canada has imposed sanctions on 256 Iranian entities and 222 individuals linked to repression and violence, both domestically and internationally. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was designated a terrorist entity in 2025, reflecting Canada’s stance against Iran’s destabilizing activities. Despite these measures, diplomatic efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear enrichment and regional aggression have seen limited progress.

Anand warned that Canada’s ability to assist citizens in Iran during active conflict is “extremely limited,” citing the absence of a Canadian embassy in the country. She urged Canadians in the region to follow local authorities and consider leaving areas with commercial travel options remaining. Meanwhile, Carney acknowledged the potential short-term impact of hostilities on oil prices but emphasized that the crisis is primarily a geopolitical and security issue, with economic consequences deemed “not that material” in the long term according to Carney’s remarks.

The government reaffirmed its support for U.S. and Israeli actions to counter Iranian nuclear ambitions and regional threats as stated in the official announcement. However, Canada has ruled out direct military involvement, with Carney stating the country was not part of the planning or execution of recent strikes.

Critics, including opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, argue that the Iranian regime’s “show no good faith in negotiations” and call for a “denuclearized Iran” aligned with democratic principles as reported by the opposition. Global Affairs Canada also joined international partners in condemning Iran’s violent crackdown on protests, urging the regime to respect freedoms of expression and assembly.

As tensions persist, Canada’s approach balances diplomatic pressure, sanctions, and cautious support for regional allies while prioritizing the safety of its citizens and civilians in conflict zones.
