Amazon Expands AWS to New Zealand with $7.5B Investment

Amazon has launched the AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region to meet growing demand for cloud services. The investment of over NZ$7.5 billion will support data centers, adding NZ$10.8 billion to New Zealand's GDP and creating over 1,000 jobs annually. Existing AWS customers in New Zealand include AMP, Kiwibank, and TVNZ. The new region will help organizations accelerate their digital transformation.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region, a significant move aimed at meeting the growing demand for cloud services in New Zealand. The new region, which includes three Availability Zones at launch, is part of AWS's broader expansion strategy to support customers with advanced cloud technologies [1].

AWS has committed to investing over NZ$7.5 billion in New Zealand to support the construction, connection, operation, and maintenance of its data centers. This investment is expected to add approximately NZ$10.8 billion to New Zealand’s gross domestic product (GDP) and support an average of more than 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually [1].

The AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region will enable organizations to store their content securely in New Zealand and achieve even lower latency, thereby accelerating digital transformation. Existing AWS customers in New Zealand, such as AMP New Zealand, Kiwibank, and TVNZ, will benefit from the enhanced capabilities of the new region [1].

AWS's commitment to New Zealand extends beyond infrastructure investment. The company has partnered with the New Zealand government to train 100,000 people in cloud skills through offerings like AWS Academy, AWS Educate, and AWS Skill Builder. To date, AWS has already provided training to more than 50,000 individuals [1].

In addition to the economic benefits, the AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region is designed to be sustainable from day one. AWS has partnered with Mercury NZ to support the development of new renewable energy capacity in New Zealand, aligning with Amazon's goal to reach net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040 [1].

Amazon's investment in New Zealand is part of a broader strategy to expand its global cloud infrastructure. AWS plans to add 10 more Availability Zones and three more AWS Regions in Chile, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud [1].
