Amazon Ends Appstore Support on Android, Discontinues Coins Program

Amazon.com (AMZN) has announced that it will be shutting down its Appstore for Android devices and discontinuing the Amazon Coins program, effective August 20, 2025. The decision, aimed at focusing efforts on Appstore experiences on Amazon devices, follows a 14-year service launch in 2011. This move comes after the discontinuation of the Appstore on Windows last year [1].

Amazon's Appstore closure will exclusively impact Android mobile devices, while the Appstore will remain operational on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices. Customers with active subscriptions on these devices can continue using them, but they have the option to cancel and receive refunds for subscriptions extending past August 20. Users are advised to update or cancel their subscription preferences ahead of the deadline [1].

The Amazon Coins program, used for apps, games, and in-app purchases, has been unavailable for purchase since February. Any remaining coins in user accounts will be refunded after August 20, although Amazon has not specified how this process will work beyond stating that additional details will be shared at a later date [1].

In a statement to Android Police, Amazon said, "We've decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that's where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it. We've also decided to retire the Appstore Coins program. Both changes will be effective August 20, 2025. Customers will be refunded for any unused Coins they've previously purchased after that date" [1].
