AltSchool Africa Lets Learners Earn Skills—and Cash—At Their Own Pace
AltSchool Africa, a prominent e-learning platform in Africa, is set to launch a new educational initiative called Nano-diploma, a self-paced learning model designed to provide learners with greater flexibility. This model allows individuals to complete courses based on their personal schedules and urgency, with no fixed timeframe as required by the traditional diploma programs, which last 12 months [1]. The initiative is aimed at professionals and working-class individuals who seek to acquire new skills during their free time [1].
Nifemi Akinwamide, the Head of Global Operations at AltSchool Africa, explained that Nano-diploma represents the company’s expansion into the self-paced learning market, catering to those who cannot afford to wait for a full academic year to gain new skills [1]. The model is structured to deliver core courses in the shortest possible time while maintaining quality. Unlike traditional programs, Nano-diploma does not require entrance exams, resumption dates, or regular assessments, making it a more accessible option for learners [1].
A key feature of the Nano-diploma initiative is its integration of personalized AI learning assistance, which helps learners digest and summarize course material [1]. AltSchool Africa is also introducing a point-based system where learners earn points during their learning journey, which can be converted into monetary value [1]. This adds a financial incentive to the learning process and could encourage greater participation and engagement.
The cost structure for Nano-diploma is significantly more affordable than AltSchool Africa’s traditional diploma courses. While the full diploma program costs $310, each Nano-diploma course is priced at $30, with each course treated as a standalone program. This pricing model allows learners to invest in specific skills without committing to a full program [1].
Currently in a testing phase, AltSchool Africa is inviting 1,000 early adopters to participate in the Nano-diploma initiative [1]. The company is publicly developing the model and has provided a link for interested participants to enroll in the testing stage. Nifemi emphasized that while the initial offering includes a selection of courses, more programs will be added over time to expand the range of skills available [1].
The introduction of Nano-diploma is part of AltSchool Africa’s broader strategy to make tech education more inclusive and accessible across Nigeria and the wider African continent [1]. The company has previously launched tech training programs for teenagers, aiming to introduce young people to tech skills at an early stage [1]. This new model reinforces AltSchool Africa’s commitment to providing diverse and adaptable learning options that meet the needs of different learner profiles.
