Alstom Wins €2 Billion US Commuter Train Contract

Alstom has secured a EUR2 billion contract for commuter trains in the US. The contract is part of Alstom's efforts to expand its presence in the rail transport sector. Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has secured a EUR2 billion contract to manufacture 316 commuter rail cars for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The contract, valued at EUR2.0 billion (USD2.3 billion), includes an option for an additional 242 cars worth up to EUR1.3 billion (USD1.5 billion). The M-9A passenger vehicles will replace the MTA’s oldest commuter cars, the 40-year-old M-3 model, and will offer a quieter, smoother, and more reliable ride. The contract is expected to create nearly 300 jobs across Alstom’s production sites in upstate New York [1].

The new vehicles will feature USB charging ports, space for wheelchairs, and accessible restrooms, as well as two sets of extra-wide doors to facilitate quick boarding and disembarkation. The new rail cars will meet the MTA’s latest cybersecurity standards and will be electric multiple units (EMUs) that do not require a locomotive.
