Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. is undergoing a major transformation from blast furnace and coke production to electric steelmaking, resulting in 1,000 layoffs, or about a third of its workforce. The transition is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 70%. The layoffs are happening in phases, with some employees voluntarily departing since the December announcement.
