Air Astana Finalizes Order for 25 Airbus A320neo Family Jets
Air Astana JSC, Kazakhstan’s leading airline group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for the purchase of 25 A320neo family aircraft, with an additional 25 purchase options according to the airline's announcement. This agreement, the largest order in the airline's history, underscores its commitment to fleet modernization and long-term growth. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2031.
The order includes a mix of A320neo and A321neo variants, with the majority allocated to the A321LR (Long-Range) model as reported. Air Astana has operated the A321LR since 2019, using it for long-haul routes to Asia and Europe. The airline highlighted its role in pioneering the A321LR's use on "long and thin" intercontinental routes, setting a benchmark for operators globally according to Luftfahrtmagazin.
The A320neo family is expected to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability, aligning with Air Astana's focus on fuel efficiency and reduced emissions as stated in the MoU. The airline currently operates 59 Airbus A320 family aircraft across its full-service carrier and low-cost subsidiary, FlyArystan, with a total fleet of 62 aircraft according to Simple Flying.
The MoU remains subject to shareholder approval. Peter Foster, Air Astana's CEO, emphasized the order's alignment with the airline's strategy to maintain operational excellence and drive sustainable growth.
This expansion reflects Air Astana's broader efforts to strengthen its position in Central Asian aviation, leveraging advanced aircraft to meet growing demand for both short- and long-haul connectivity. With a 20-year partnership with Airbus, the airline continues to prioritize fleet renewal as a cornerstone of its operational and environmental goals.
