India’s government has announced a $1.25 billion (INR103.74 billion) initiative to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, with a focus on supporting startups, developing infrastructure, and fostering indigenous AI capabilities. The IndiaAI Mission, approved in 2024 and implemented by the IndiaAI Independent Business Division under the Digital India Corporation, will allocate approximately $543 million (INR45 billion) to build computing infrastructure, including over 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) under a public-private partnership model. An additional $241 million (INR20 billion) will be directed toward financing high-potential AI startups over five years according to the initiative.

The initiative emphasizes democratizing access to AI resources, with plans to establish an open-source database for training models, an AI-as-a-service marketplace, and pre-trained models for developers. A key objective is to develop domain-specific foundational models and large multimodal models (LMMs) tailored to India’s critical sectors, such as healthcare and agriculture. The government also aims to expand AI skills in tier-2 and tier-3 cities and promote responsible AI development through indigenous tools and frameworks as part of the mission.

This investment aligns with broader national efforts to position India as a global AI hub. While the IndiaAI Mission focuses on deep-tech innovation, complementary private-sector commitments—such as Reliance Industries’ $110 billion AI infrastructure pledge—highlight a coordinated push to reduce costs and scale accessibility according to Forbes analysis. Analysts note that India’s AI market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 25-35%, reaching $17 billion by 2027, driven by rising demand for affordable, scalable solutions as research shows.
