ACCC probing into diesel supply conduct
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has intensified its scrutiny of diesel supply practices amid regional and rural distribution challenges exacerbated by the Middle Eastern crisis. The regulator is investigating whether fuel retailers have engaged in misleading pricing conduct or anti-competitive behavior during recent price volatility, with Commissioner Anna Brakey emphasizing that "any collusive or deceptive practices will be investigated and addressed" according to the ACCC. The ACCC has convened an emergency meeting with major fuel companies, wholesalers, and motoring organizations to demand transparency on pricing decisions and supply chain disruptions as reported.
Weekly market updates will be published to enhance consumer transparency, while the ACCC explores measures to stabilize diesel availability in regional areas. The commission has authority to authorize temporary coordination agreements among suppliers if they deliver a "net public benefit," particularly for critical sectors like agriculture and transport as stated. Recent reports highlight diesel shortages in rural communities, prompting the ACCC to prioritize solutions in collaboration with other agencies according to the ACCC.
The government has also announced plans to double penalties for breaches of consumer and competition laws from $50 million to $100 million, a move the ACCC supports. In February 2026, the Federal Court fined Mobil Oil Australia $16 million for false representations about fuel quality, underscoring enforcement priorities as detailed. Consumers are advised to use ACCC price-tracking tools to identify competitive retailers.
The ACCC's latest petrol monitoring report, published on 6 March 2026, will soon include regional price data, reflecting expanded oversight under a Ministerial Direction renewed in December 2025 according to the ACCC. The regulator remains focused on ensuring fair market practices while addressing immediate supply concerns.
