ABTC's internally-developed technology is designed to produce lithium hydroxide through an electrochemical route, significantly reducing the need for chemical agents and waste generation compared to conventional methods. The company has been working for several years to develop and commercialize this technology, which can be integrated into both its critical mineral recycling facilities and its 'claystone-to-lithium hydroxide' refinery near Tonopah, Nevada.
The collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory will involve testing ABTC's systems using the Advanced Photon Source (APS) particle accelerator and analyzing the results with the Aurora Exascale Supercomputer. These trials will generate vast amounts of data that will inform long-term predictive models to guide ABTC's lithium hydroxide production. The initiative aligns with broader U.S. goals of reducing dependency on foreign mineral supply chains and strengthening energy security.
ABTC's CEO, Ryan Melsert, stated, "We are committed to developing the next generation of critical mineral manufacturing technologies and to bringing these technologies to commercialization in our domestic-US facilities. We are proud to be addressing the challenges of bringing such advanced processing technologies to market with a partner such as the Argonne National Laboratory."
This agreement is part of a broader strategy for ABTC to collaborate with other leading U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories, including Idaho National Laboratory and National Renewable Energy Laboratory, to advance domestically manufactured critical minerals.

American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) has been awarded a $1 million agreement by the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory ReCell Center to advance its novel lithium manufacturing technologies. ABTC aims to commercialize a technology that produces lithium hydroxide without consuming chemical agents, reducing operational costs and environmental impact. The collaboration will utilize Argonne's particle accelerator to generate data, which will be analyzed using the Aurora Exascale Supercomputer. This partnership supports ABTC's strategy to advance domestically manufactured critical minerals and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.
