USW extends US Steel, Cleveland-Cliffs contracts for now: Blaw
The United Steelworkers (USW) union and both U.S. Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. have extended their existing labor contracts past the original expiration date of September 1, 2026, allowing additional time for negotiations. The extension follows ongoing discussions that have yet to resolve key issues, including healthcare, wages, retirement benefits, and capital investment commitments.
USW officials emphasized that significant economic and safety-related concerns remain unresolved in negotiations with U.S. Steel, including reduce benefits or fail to increase pensions. Cleveland-Cliffs negotiations also involve issues such as attendance policies, training programs, and investment commitments.
U.S. Steel has proposed an 18.5% pay increase over five years, a $4,000 signing bonus, and no changes to pension plans or profit-sharing arrangements. Cleveland-Cliffs has not commented on the specifics of ongoing talks but affirmed its commitment to reaching a fair agreement.
The extension avoids immediate disruption to operations at key facilities, including U.S. Steel’s Minntac and Keetac mines and Cleveland-Cliffs’ United Taconite and Northshore Mining Co. operations. However, the outcome of the extended negotiations remains uncertain, with both sides continuing to meet and refine proposals.
