Germany is set to house the world's largest stadium solar roof, which will be installed at Borussia Dortmund's SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. The solar array will consist of 11,000 photovoltaic panels and have a capacity of 4.2 MW, capable of generating over 4 MWh of electricity annually. This ambitious project is a significant step towards sustainable sports operations and is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1,800 metric tons annually.
The initiative is a partnership between Borussia Dortmund, energy giant RWE, and China-based leading PV module manufacturer JA SOLAR. The use of JA SOLAR’s modules will power the largest photovoltaic system on any stadium roof, setting a new standard for the energy transition. The project builds upon Borussia Dortmund’s prior sustainability efforts, including a smaller 1 MW PV system installed in 2012. The club intends to utilize all generated electricity on-site, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing its carbon footprint.
