Andor' creator explains recasting major 'Star Wars' character

The recasting of a major 'Star Wars' character in the show Andor was necessitated by scheduling conflicts and logistical challenges. The original actor, Jimmy Smits, who had played Senator Bail Organa in the film Rogue One and other Star Wars projects, was unavailable for the role in Andor due to his prior commitments. This is a common issue when trying to incorporate established characters into new sequels, prequels, or spinoffs, as the original actor's schedule may not align with the production schedule of the new project.
The Andor creator, Tony Gilroy, acknowledged the difficulties in finding the right actor and the expense associated with bringing back a legacy character. He expressed that the decision to recast was not taken lightly, but that the scheduling didn't work out, and they really tried hard to make it work, but ultimately, it was not possible. The recasting process involved finding a suitable replacement, which led to the casting of Benjamin Bratt as Senator Organa in Andor's second season.
Gilroy also mentioned that he wanted to avoid confusion between the introduction of the new actor and the character's subsequent development. By giving Benjamin Bratt a brief appearance early in the season, Gilroy aimed to get the introduction out of the way so that the focus could be on the character's role in the story rather than the casting decision. This strategy allowed the show to move forward with the new actor while maintaining continuity with the original Star Wars universe.
