U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose by 147,000 in June, aligning closely with the 12-month average gain of 146,000, according to data released Thursday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%, a level largely consistent with its narrow range since May 2024. Job growth was concentrated in state government and health care, with the former adding 47,000 positions—40,000 of which came from education—and the latter expanding by 39,000. Local government education employment continued to trend up by 23,000. Meanwhile, federal government employment declined by 7,000, extending a cumulative loss of 69,000 jobs since January.
